When Should You Start Revising for A-levels? A Science Student’s Timeline

If you’re an A-level science student, you’ve probably already realised that the jump from GCSE or IGCSE to A-level is a big one. There’s more content, more detail, and more applied thinking. So when should you start revising to stay on top of it all?

At SwH Learning, we know that every student is different, but getting the timing right can make the difference between feeling confident and feeling overwhelmed. Here’s our guide to when and how to start revising effectively for your A-levels.

Why Timing Matters

A-level sciences, whether Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, are content-heavy and conceptually challenging. The earlier you begin consolidating your learning, the easier it will be to link topics together and tackle exam questions confidently.

That doesn’t mean you need to revise intensely from day one, it’s about steady, strategic preparation throughout the course.

A-level Revision Timeline for Science Students

Year 12 (Lower Sixth)

September – December: Build a Strong Foundation

  • Focus on understanding core concepts rather than memorising.

  • Make your own notes after each topic, ideally within 24 hours of learning it.

  • Use your class time to ask questions and clarify tricky ideas (especially in Chemistry and Physics).

  • Watch topic walkthroughs on our YouTube channel Science with Hazel for extra support.

January – April: Begin Light Revision

  • Revisit earlier topics briefly each week; 20–30 minutes per subject.

  • Create flashcards for key definitions, equations and processes.

  • Start short, focused past-paper questions to build exam technique.

  • Our SwH Learning revision guides are perfect for this stage!

May – June: First-Year Exams

  • These are your first big test of understanding. Treat them as real exams.

  • Two to three weeks before exams, create a revision timetable that focuses on weaker topics.

  • After exams, reflect on what worked. This insight will help enormously in Year 13.

Summer Between Year 12 and Year 13

  • Take a short break first. You’ve earned it!

  • Then spend a few days reviewing your Year 12 content.

  • Make sure your notes are complete and well-organised.

  • Watch recap videos or tackle a few past-paper questions each week; this keeps your brain active without burnout.

  • Our A-level revision guides are ideal summer companions, helping you review topics at your own pace.

Year 13 (Upper Sixth)

September – December: Consolidate and Connect

  • A-level sciences build heavily on Year 12 content – make sure it’s still fresh.

  • Begin linking themes across the syllabus (e.g. enzyme kinetics in Biology or thermodynamics in Chemistry).

  • Update flashcards and summary sheets regularly.

  • Light exam-style practice should now be weekly.

January – April: Full Revision Mode

  • This is where you ramp up. Create a structured timetable with daily revision blocks.

  • Mix topic review with timed exam questions.

  • Use SwH Learning’s A-level resources to focus on command words, application, and practical questions.

May – June: Exam Season

  • By now, you should be focusing on exam technique and confidence.

  • Use past papers under timed conditions.

  • Rest, sleep, and self-care are essential; a tired mind won’t recall well.

  • Join our SwH Learning A-level revision courses for a final confidence boost before your exams

Key Takeaway

Start building revision habits from the very beginning of Year 12. Not hours of study, but consistent, small steps. By doing this, you’ll avoid the Year 13 panic and feel genuinely prepared for your A-level exams.
